Orthopaedics and Prosthetics

Orthopaedics and Prosthetics - GVM International

Diseases of the locomotor system, whether congenital, degenerative or traumatic, are often severely disabling conditions; as a matter of fact, they have a direct effect on a person’s autonomy and self-sufficiency and, as a result, quality of life.

For many years now the GVM Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department has dealt with the treatment of and recovery from traumatism of the musculoskeletal system. The main pathologies treated are degenerative diseases of major joints (hips, knees and shoulders) that have undergone replacement surgery and traumatically-induced joint diseases typical of Sports Medicine such as meniscal, ligament and cartilage disorders of the knee, injured shoulder tendons and ligaments, femoroacetabular impingement syndromes, and damage to the cartilage and ligaments of the ankle.

The activity includes:

  • Specialist visits and post-operative checks
  • Emergency department
  • Joint infiltration therapy
  • Orthopaedic surgical treatments
  • Application/removal of plaster casts
  • Sports traumatology: Clinic dedicated to diagnosing and treating patients of all ages with traumas resulting from sports (competitive and non-competitive) and traumatic injuries due to functional overload.

It provides a targeted therapeutic pathway, supported by the necessary diagnostics services depending on the clinical case.

IN-PATIENT TREATMENTS
Treatments carried out as in-patient care:

  • Arthroscopy: As day hospital or day surgery for cruciate ligament reconstruction;
  • Osteotomy: To restore the correct axis of the limbs;
  • Prosthetic surgery: There are different approaches based on the type of disease. The San Carlo di Nancy Hospital tends to propose approaches that preserve the healthy parts of the joint whenever possible. For this reason, unicompartmental prostheses (also known as mini-prostheses, or resurfacing prostheses) are widely used. Furthermore, the use of the NAVIO Robotic System allows accurate positioning of the prosthesis, which results in maximum recovery of joint movement. The Orthopaedics and Traumatology Unit is a point of reference in the area for this type of approach. It guarantees better and faster functional recovery and allows complete functionality of the joint to be maintained. Average admission time is two days (for unicompartmental prostheses) or three days (total prostheses).
