Arrhythmology

Electrophysiology is a specialisation within Interventional Cardiology that studies, diagnoses and treats arrhythmias, i.e. electric defects to the heart's conduction system, and heart failure, i.e. situations in which the heart is unable to contract and pump blood correctly. Anomalous heartbeats are evaluated on the basis of their aetiology and their repercussions on the patient's health, and are addressed using targeted treatments.

GVM Care & Research is on the cutting edge for the treatment of atrial fibrillation by means of non-flouroscopic electroanatomical mapping systems and cryoenergy (Cryoablation). The Group is also an international gold standard for pacemakers and defibrillators for the prevention of sudden death and for the implantation of miniaturised pacemakers (MICRA – TPS). The Group serves as an international training centre for the latter technique.

Finally radiofrequency transcatheter ablation is used to treat all cardiac arrhythmias, especially, nodal reentrant tachycardia, Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome (WPW), Atrial Tachycardia, Atrial Flutter, Idiopathic Ventricular Tachycardia, Postinfarction Ventricular Tachycardia and Ventricular Tachycardia in congenital arrhythmogenic syndromes (right ventricular dysplasia, Brugada Syndrome).

The remote monitoring system is particularly significant: a veritable virtual clinic dedicated to persons implanted with a cardiac device (pacemaker or defibrillator), which represents the new frontier in home care. The constant monitoring of the heart is based on the automatic transmission of data from the implanted device to the hospital's computer by means of an ordinary phone line. Controls are only triggered when the therapy needs to be improved or in situations where a new clinical condition arises and the treatment being administered needs to be monitored.
