Clinical and Interventional Cardiology

Congenital or acquired cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality in the world. In this field the most widespread and disabling diseases are myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome, ischaemic heart disease, heart valve diseases and cardiomyopathies.

Due to its low degree of invasiveness and the modest possibility of complications, the endovascular surgical solution is the new frontier for treating these diseases; GVM is undoubtedly among the more important specialists in Italy and in the world in this field, with 31.949 endovascular surgeries performed in 2014, of which 23.888 diagnostic coronary angiography procedures, 6.241 coronary angioplasty procedures (PTCA) and 2.333 cases of noncoronary angioplasty (PTA).

With regard to diagnosis, investigation methods range from the baseline and pharmacologic stress echocardiogram, to the Holter Monitor, from continuous electrocardiographic monitoring, to the stress ECG, from the morphological cardiac MRI to the CT coronary angiogram, from vessel ultrasounds to overall vascular diagnostics.

With regard to quality and to the type of approach, it is undoubtedly important to mention the involvement of GVM’s Interventional Cardiology Department in the TAVI 1 and 2 program (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation), and the innovative techniques for aortic reconstruction.

Coordinator of GVM’s Interventional Cardiology Department, Dr. Fausto Castriota, one of the most important Italian specialists in the field of endovascular surgery, of TAVI implantations and of the reconstruction of the aortic arch.
